To the members of the MIT community,
As an immigrant to the United States, I have deep admiration and reverence for America's best qualities and its great democratic traditions.
Today's events in Washington shocked us all. The pain reminded us sharply of how much we value those democratic traditions – and of how fragile they are. They demand our respect, protection and care. They demand the best of us.
We did not see the best of America in the attack on the Capitol today. I trust that we may in the days ahead.
