Ann Wolpert

October 02, 2013

To the members of the MIT Community:

I write to share the sad news that Ann Wolpert, the visionary director of the MIT Libraries, passed away last night after an illness.

Ann was a quiet, brilliant idealist and thinker, and a passionate doer who led our community conversation on the subject of open access. As a longstanding member of Academic Council, MIT's highest academic advisory body, she served three MIT presidents. I will always be grateful for the gift of her clear, candid counsel and her ability to envision and shape the future of information sharing and access.

For a sense of Ann and her influence at MIT and beyond, I encourage you to read her obituary.

We join in sympathy with her husband, Sam, her extended family, and her many friends and admirers across MIT.

Sincerely,

L. Rafael Reif
