Charles Marstiller Vest (1941-2013)
To the members of the MIT community:
With great sadness, I write to share the news that Charles Marstiller Vest, MIT’s 15th president, and a dear friend and colleague to many members of the MIT family, passed away last night after a long illness. He was 72.
In his understated, down-to-earth style, Chuck led MIT for 14 years with tremendous vision, moral courage, integrity and heart. The MIT News obituary offers a sense of Chuck’s remarkable contributions to MIT and to the nation.
We will find opportunities soon to celebrate his life and honor his accomplishments.
For now, I join you in mourning the loss of a wonderful friend, a passionate champion for engineering and science, and a devoted citizen of MIT.
With deepest sympathy,
L. Rafael Reif
