Prof. Mujid Kazimi, 1947-2015

July 02, 2015

To the members of the MIT community,

I write to share sad, unexpected news: While visiting China as part of an international advisory committee for Harbin Engineering University, Professor Mujid Kazimi MS '71, PhD '73 died suddenly yesterday of natural causes.

Born in Jerusalem, Mujid studied as an undergraduate at Alexandria University in Egypt and came to MIT for his graduate degrees in nuclear engineering. Since joining our faculty 39 years ago, he has been a wonderful presence on campus -- a thoughtful teacher, dedicated mentor, and brilliant engineer who devoted his life to making nuclear power safer and more economical for societies around the world.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Mujid embodied MIT's interdisciplinary strength, serving as both the TEPCO Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He provided outstanding leadership for the Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES) as well as the Kuwait-MIT Center for Natural Resources and the Environment. You can learn more about Mujid's accomplishments here.

Our hearts go out to Professor Kazimi's family, students, colleagues and friends as they absorb this unexpected loss, which reminds us so vividly that each individual is precious and irreplaceable. As plans emerge to commemorate him, we will share them via MIT News.

As always, the Institute's student support and mental health services are available to all members of the MIT community.

In deep sympathy,

L. Rafael Reif
